Home Organization Planner
Plan one room at a time: measure, sort and decide before you buy a single bin.
Home Organization Planner
A five-step method, a room priority list, a worksheet to print per room, and a layout grid where one square is six inches.
- The five-step method: empty, sort, measure, plan, shop last
- A room priority list and a worksheet to print per room
- Layout grid where one square is six inches
The usual order is backwards. People buy baskets, then try to make the room fit them. This planner reverses it: decide what the room is for, empty it, measure every shelf and gap, and only then work out what, if anything, you need.
The worksheet is the heart of it. One sheet per room, with a column for the storage you already own and another for what is still missing, with its size. Most people find the second column is much shorter than they expected.
What is inside
- Five steps, one room at a time: pick, empty and sort, measure, plan zones, shop last
- Room priority list: what is not working, priority 1 to 3, target date, for eleven rooms
- Room worksheet to print once per room: purpose, measurements, keep/move/donate/repair, storage owned versus still needed
- Layout sketch grid, one square = 6 inches, for doors, windows, outlets and furniture
Who it is for
Anyone about to reorganise a kitchen, closet, office or garage, especially if the last attempt ended with a stack of containers that did not fit.
How to use it
- Fill in the priority list on page two. Start with the room that bothers you most, not the biggest.
- Print one worksheet per room. Measure in inches and write everything down before sorting.
- Sketch the layout on the grid. Shop last, and only for the sizes on the sheet.
FAQ
Questions about this printable
Does it work with the 30-Day Declutter Challenge?
Well. The challenge clears the small spots in 15-minute bursts; the planner is for when a whole room needs rethinking. Many people do the challenge first and then use the planner on the one or two rooms that still need work.
Why measure before sorting?
Because measurements do not change and your energy does. If you measure first, the numbers are on the sheet when you are tired and tempted to guess. The Closet Capacity Calculator on this site does the sums for wardrobes.
Is the grid big enough for a whole room?
At one square per six inches, the page covers a room of roughly 12 by 15 feet. For bigger rooms, print two and tape them, or sketch one half of the room per page.
