Guidelines
What a good guide looks like
800–1,500 words. Longer is fine when the topic needs it.
- Practical first Every guide gives readers something to do: a method, a checklist, a step-by-step. Start with what costs nothing before anything to buy.
- Original and yours Unpublished anywhere else, written by you. No AI-spun, paraphrased or recycled text.
- Honest claims Say what something will not do. Health, safety and environmental claims link to a reliable source.
- Easy to scan Clear H2 and H3 headings, short paragraphs, lists where they help. UK spelling.
- Images you can use At least one original or royalty-free image, with credit. No copyrighted photos.
- Helpful links Link to sources, tools and resources that help the reader, including your own site where it is relevant.
How it works
From pitch to published
- Pitch Email two headline ideas and a 2–3 sentence summary. Please don’t send a full draft yet.
- Review We read every pitch and reply within 2–4 business days if it fits.
- Write and edit You write the guide to the agreed outline. We edit for clarity, accuracy and house style, and may ask for changes.
- Fee and publish Once the final draft is accepted, we send payment details for the $75 publishing fee, then schedule the guide with your byline and bio.
The $75 publishing fee
Charged once per article, only after the final draft is accepted. It covers editing and preparing your guide for the site. Pitching and rejected articles cost nothing.

Before you pitch
Do I pay to pitch?
No. Pitching is free. The $75 fee applies only when a finished article is accepted for publishing.
What if my article is not accepted?
Then there is nothing to pay, and you are free to take the idea elsewhere.
Why is there a fee?
It covers editing and preparing your guide for the site. It does not buy a guaranteed yes: every article still has to meet the guidelines.
Does my idea have to fit one of these topics exactly?
No. It just needs to be generally about what we write about: a calmer, greener, better-organised home. If you are not sure, pitch it and ask.
Can I include links?
Yes. Link to sources and resources that help the reader, including your own site where it fits the guide.
Can I publish the article somewhere else too?
No. Accepted guides must be original and stay exclusive to wood-blocks.
